Teaching Writing Intervention in a Oral-Based Group Format

Course Description

This seminar trains clinicians in the use of the oral expressive based writing program developed by the presenter and employed here at the Annandale Fluency Clinic. The maximum number of participants is 12. During the hands-on portion (which is the majority of the time) you will be working with a small group. We will rotate groups for each exercise, to ensure you are getting different kinds of responses and varying response styles. The seminars are intended for speech-language pathologists and LD/resource teachers. Only working professionals will be accepted.

The Presenter

Heather Buhl Meadows, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a Speech Language Pathologist who received her M.S. from Syracuse University. She has been working with the Annandale Fluency Clinic since 1997 providing SLP services for children, adolescents and adults and particularly employing the clinic’s integrated multisensory reading curriculum. She has worked in a variety of settings, providing treatment in individual language therapy for expressive language disordered children and adults. Two years ago she developed the highly successful Summer Intensive Writing Program for adolescents and adults for the Annandale Fluency Clinic. An overview of this program was presented as a short seminar at the American Speech Language Hearing Association Annual Convention in 2002.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this seminar, the participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the relationship of oral language disorders to written language weaknesses.
  • Develop appropriate intervention strategies for remediation of written language disorders in school age children.
  • Facilitate group brainstorming, writing, and editing activitie
  • Teach students to use oral language to organize and develop their written work.
  • Identify good candidates for an intensive writing program based on prerequisite skills.
Lunch and break snacks will be provided.

Registration & Costs

The workshop fee is $110.00 per day.
This seminar is offered twice per year, typically in spring and in fall.
